In the heart of Downtown Champaign, Amanda McWilliams and Scott Schaub, the dynamic duo behind Furniture Lounge, have been weaving their story for nearly two decades. As proud owners, they’ve not only witnessed the remarkable growth of the vibrant Champaign area but have also played a pivotal role in its transformation. Their journey, deeply intertwined with the evolution of the community, reflects their passion for modern furniture. Through years of dedication, they’ve not only cultivated a unique space for enthusiasts but have also grown alongside their customers, sharing an enduring love for all things modern and stylish.

How did you start Furniture Lounge?

Well, it all began 22 years ago when we had this dream of opening a general consignment store. We were on the lookout for spacious locations, and by sheer chance, we stumbled upon a quaint spot next door to where we are now. Inside that little space, we found a modern chair, and right then and there, we decided to pivot towards specializing in mid-century modern instead of general consignment. That was the spark that ignited Furniture Lounge. We’ve come a long way since then, having moved locations several times. From our beginnings next door to downtown Urbana, a brief stint in a Saint Joseph warehouse, and now firmly planted in our current spot since 2011. The journey has been filled with challenges, but we’ve always found our way back to our roots, committed to providing the best in mid-century modern furniture.

What can you expect to find at Furniture Lounge?

At Furniture Lounge, you’ll discover a vibrant collection that goes beyond just buying and selling mid-century furniture. While the term might seem generic, our range spans from the 1930s to the 1980s, capturing the essence of modern design. We’re not strict about dates – if it’s modern and well-crafted, it has a place in our collection, even if it’s a newer addition. But our offerings don’t stop at furniture. We dive into the realms of art, unique lamps, diverse interior decor, records, clothing, and even stereo equipment. It’s more than a store; it’s a lively, artfully cluttered space, tailor-made for the alternative shopper seeking one-of-a-kind treasures. Our focus extends to consigning and outright buying. While our passion lies in buying outright, we also embrace the charm of consignment for special finds. Picture us as your mini mid-century modern department store, where the inventory is always evolving. What sets us apart is not just our eclectic mix but the fact that we’re collectors ourselves. Beyond being a shopping destination, Furniture Lounge is a welcoming spot to engage in lively conversations about furniture, design, and the rich history behind each piece. So, whether you’re on the hunt for a distinctive piece or simply want to geek out about design, we’ve crafted a space just for you.

Why did you decide to make Downtown Champaign Furniture Lounge's home?

Well, when we first started looking for a home for Furniture Lounge, Downtown Champaign caught our eye. Back then, it was up and coming, not as bustling as it is today. Plus, it turned out to be the only place we could both afford and genuinely wanted to be. The charm of the area, paired with the cool features of the space, like a spiral staircase in the basement, made it stand out. Sure, the building needed some TLC with deferred maintenance, and we faced a few challenges, but it always felt like the right fit for us. When the chance to return to this block came up, we didn’t hesitate. Eventually, we even ended up owning the building, giving us the freedom from a landlord. The unique character of downtown and the events that unfolded just made us feel like we belonged here.
