Valerie Coleman of Ragstock

Ragstock is a trendy clothing store in Campustown stocking vintage clothing from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s plus affordable new fashions for men & women. CCP spoke with manager Valerie Coleman.

When did Ragstock open in Champaign?

August 2013.

What is your job at the store?

I’m the store manager, overseeing about six employees.

What does a typical day look like?

Oh boy! I start the day with weekly paperwork, sales analysis, and inventory. The biggest part of the day is visual merchandising. We display clothes to appeal to our customers. This week it’s mermaid flare pants. My Google search history is a bit unusual!

What are some of your most popular items?

90’s jackets and flannels are our top-sellers year-round. We also carry create-your-own costumes apparel year-round. Some people think we’re a party store!

What’s unique about your merchandise?

That we carry new and used (“recycled”) merchandise at a range of price-points that are affordable. We have some very unique finds.

What do you think makes Campustown special?

The diversity. It’s like a small world on campus. There are always new businesses and types of businesses opening. It’s always interesting to see something new and exciting that Campustown is constantly growing and changing.

What are you most excited for at Ragstock this year?

Our potential to grow. We’re getting more established in the community and are starting to find what works for us.
